56th Annual Labour Weekend Tournament HIGH STANDARD OF TENNIS AT BAIRNSDALE OPEN
Fine weather throughout the weekend greeted large entries in the 48 events in this year’s 56th Annual Labour Weekend Tournament.
229 singles entries and 216 doubles entries were received.
Fourteen year old Steven Donald completed back to back wins in the Mens open singles defeating former local Anthony Glynn in the highest standard final in years.
Donald, who recently competed in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Championship in New Zealand with some success, won in three sets 6/7 6/4 7/6.
Carla Angele claimed the Womens open singles title defeating Marita Meeking 6/3 6/1. Angele has won the title on two previous occasions, and was thrilled to regain the title.
Anthony Glynn continued his good form to claim both the Mens doubles with Russell Watts and mixed doubles with Sarah Sparnem for the second year in succession.
Outgoing club professional coach Mike Spruzen teamed with son, Jye, to win the A Grade doubles in another high standard final against Steven Donald and older brother, Matt, after Jye had defeated Matt in a wonderful A Grade Mens final.
Other Bairnsdale players to shine were Natasha Dunn, with great wins over Beryl Manley and Chantelle Overy to take out the B Grade Womens singles, Sophie Vickers in winning the 12 and under singles, and Maddi Barnett in winning the 14 and under singles.
Manley was later successful in taking out the Over 35 Womens singles, whilst Melanie McPhee and Emily Spencer took out the B Grade Womens doubles.
Mike Spruzen teamed with tournament manager John Glynn to win the Over 35 Mens doubles, but went down in the Over 35 singles to Russell Watts, who is soon to compete in a major senior pennant in Germany.
